Coatings of Spiral Flute Taps and Their Suitable Materials

Spiral flute taps are widely used in metal threading for their excellent chip evacuation, and the right coating can greatly enhance their performance, service life and adaptability to different materials. Below are the most common coatings of spiral flute taps and their applicable materials, helping you choose the perfect tap for your machining needs.
1. TiN (Titanium Nitride) Coating
Appearance: Golden yellow Features: Universal, wear-resistant and cost-effective, with good lubricity and corrosion resistance. Suitable Materials: Low carbon steel, medium carbon steel, ordinary alloy steel, aluminum alloy and copper alloy. Not Suitable: Stainless steel and high-hardness materials.
2. TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) Coating
Appearance: Gunmetal gray or blue-gray Features: Harder and more wear-resistant than TiN coating, with lower friction coefficient and better thermal stability. Suitable Materials: Medium and high carbon steel, alloy steel, pre-hardened steel and cast iron.
3. TiAlN/AlTiN (Titanium Aluminum Nitride) Coating
Appearance: Violet black or gray black Features: Excellent high-temperature resistance and oxidation resistance, high hardness, suitable for high-speed cutting. Suitable Materials: Mold steel, hardened steel (HRC40 and above), high-hardness alloy and high-temperature alloy.
4. TiN+MoS2 Coating
Appearance: Black gold Features: Self-lubricating, low friction coefficient, effectively preventing chip adhesion and improving chip evacuation. Suitable Materials: Stainless steel (SUS303/304/316), easy-to-adhere materials and non-ferrous metals.
5. DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) Coating
Appearance: Glossy black Features: Extremely low friction coefficient, high hardness and good wear resistance, perfect for anti-adhesion. Suitable Materials: Aluminum alloy, copper alloy, magnesium alloy, plastic and composite materials.
6. VAPO/Oxide Coating
Appearance: Black Features: Rust-proof, oil-storing and low-cost, with simple production process. Suitable Materials: Ordinary carbon steel and cast iron, ideal for economical threading needs.
7. Special Coating for Stainless Steel
Type: Usually TiCN-based composite coating with self-lubricating layer. Features: Solves the problems of galling and tap breakage during stainless steel processing. Suitable Materials: SUS303/304/316, duplex stainless steel and high-temperature stainless steel.
